Mark Platt 17 March 2007 Rafael Benitez has hailed the ever-increasing influence of Jamie Carragher at the heart of Liverpool's defence and pushed his claims for a regular berth in the England side. | |
Even by his usual own high standards, Carragher's recent form has been outstanding and it's not gone unnoticed by his club boss. Benitez believes the Reds modern day 'colossus' has few peers in the English game and that England could do a lot worse than play him from the start in the forthcoming Euro 2008 qualifiers against Israel and Andorra. "It's clear he's playing well," said the Liverpool manager. "In the three years since I've been here Carra has been a key player for us. "He's always focussed on football and always talking football. He works hard in every training session and is always so keen to learn. "His influence rubs off on those around him and players like him are so good for team spirit. "For me, he's one of the best in the country and I'd like to see him playing for England because he deserves it. "But, of course, that decision is down to Steve McClaren and if he's not selected then I suppose that's good for us because it means he'll get a rest!" |
