LIVERPOOL V PSV: THE FINAL WORD

Steven Gerrard became Liverpool's all-time record goalscorer in the European Cup as Rafael Benitez's side produced a superb performance to win 3-0 in PSV Eindhoven. Here's the best of the post-match reaction.

The Liverpool manager

"We played well, it was an organised, effective performance. But we are all more concerned about Fabio. It was a terrible injury. We believe it is very serious although we will not be sure until after a scan when we get back to Liverpool. Fabio has started to play really well, this is a very bad blow for him and us. There was nobody anywhere near him, he felt as if he had been hit by a stone. The pain was from behind and it struck him like he had been hit, it is a real tragedy for us. We broke some records and that is very positive for the club and the players. We want to see Stevie scoring goals, Carra playing lots of games and the team winning games. It would be perfect if we could do it this year. There must be no room for complacency now. We must take the second leg seriously and play a proper match. If we can keep them quiet for the first 45 minutes, then maybe we can start thinking of reaching the semi-finals. For me this is a different feeling from the season we won the trophy. This team is better than that one was, but this is another year, another competition. Although we are getting closer."
Rafael Benitez

The opposition manager

"We played with the same tactics against Arsenal to beat them in the last round. But we have injuries now, we are missing a few important players, and you could see that we did not have the quality to match Liverpool. The result is bad. It is impossible now to go to Anfield and make out a case for reaching the next round. If I tried to find a reason to believe that, I would be from another planet. We played well until they scored their first. Then we started to give Steve Finnan too much freedom and we started to make mistakes. From then on it was clear that Liverpool were too strong for us. It is not realistic to think that we can win the tie now."
Ronald Koeman

The Liverpool player

"I'm a bit embarrassed to beat Rushie's record to be honest. He is someone I've watched as a kid and I never dreamt I'd break one of his records. I don't think I'll be breaking any of his other ones. I'm flattered but it's not really important to me. What's more important is how well the team is doing. It was a really good performance and hopefully we can go all the way. After we got the first it was a case of just carrying on. We are hard to break down and we made them pay on the counter attack. Everyone can see there's a big difference to how we're playing now compared to when we last played in Eindhoven. We were more inconsistent as a team when we met them last time and had a lot of big players who weren't on form. If you look at us now, all the big names are performing well, whether it's Carragher, Reina or Alonso. It's the same for me. I was really frustrated at the beginning of the season because I was lacking energy in my game and felt lethargic physically and mentally. But since Christmas I've been feeling everything coming back. I'm training better and hopefully peaking at the right time because there are so many big games around the corner. We're all getting those feelings again as we did two years ago, but we're also telling ourselves to slow down. There's still a lot of work to do before we can think about Athens."
