Paul Rogers 11 March 2007 Jamie Carragher today backed Rafael Benitez to create a footballing dynasty at Anfield after leading the Reds into the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the second time in three years. | |
Benitez short reign at Liverpool has been nothing short of exceptional and with two major trophies lifted in his first two seasons on Merseyside, Carragher believes that the boss is here to stay – no matter what clubs come knocking at his door. "He wouldn't get anything better than Liverpool, or I wouldn't think so," Carragher said of the tabloid rumours that a certain Spanish club may be interested in his services. "He can buy his own players here. He's one of the best managers around. He proved that at Valencia, and he's already proved it here. Hopefully we can go on again over the next few years and win more things. "All the players enjoy working with him. I'm sure you can see the difference he's made over the last few years, especially in Europe. Next season we want to push on and do well in the Premiership as well." Asked about Liverpool's chances of making it six European Cups in Athens this May and Carragher was hesitant too look too far past the next round and the visit of PSV to Anfield. The fans, as ever on European nights, could make all the difference. "The Anfield factor is massive," claimed Carragher. "Over the years, that's got to be up there, along with the final, as one of our best results because for me Barcelona are still the best team in the world. "We're not going to kid ourselves. I'd still say Barcelona are a better side than us. We're not the best team in Europe. But it's not always the best team that wins a knockout competition." |
